We’ve chosen a route that presents quite a challenge! Travel Guides to the area emphasise that ‘Between Bala and Ruabon lies some of the most dramatic landscape in Wales. The River Dee snakes its way through steep sided mountains and popular tourist towns’ ..not easily negotiated by riders on horses. However, first by car and then on foot and horse, equipped with maps of various types and ages plus a magnifying glass ..we’ve ventured forth in all kinds of ‘summer’ weather to plot our course. Much help and advice has been given about ownership of farmland etc. so we will be able to follow cross-country routes wherever possible but inevitably there will have be a fair amount of road work. The latter throws up different problems: acutely steep gradients, combine-harvesters and busy traffic on main roads.
